Garmann/Miller Sponsors
"Design an Ad"
Local businesses sponsored a contest for area 5th graders put forth by The Evening Leader newspaper. The papers advertising department taught the art students at Minster Middle School basic ad design skills highlighting the necessary requirements for a great ad. Several students were given a business in which to design an ad. Each business picked the best ad which was in turn published in the paper. An overall first, second, and third place winner was also selected by the newspaper.
Among eight entries designed for Garmann / Miller, the winning ad was drawn by Isaac Gibson shown below.

Going Green with Wind Turbines

In an attempt to go green, Meijer retail supercenter has plans of adding wind power to some of its stores.
Wind turbines will be added to the Meijer's headquarters store in Walker, Michigan, just outside of Grand Rapids. The current plan is for six wind turbines to be installed on the roof of the store, with meters being place inside the building. Cascade Engineering is manufacturing the turbines, which should be installed within the next few months.
"We continue to look for ways to decrease our carbon footprint and this wind turbine project is another example of how we can apply innovation to be greener," Stacie Behler, Meijer VP of Communications and Public Affairs said.
Meijer hopes the project can expand to include its stores in Grand Haven and Norton Shores, Michigan. Other green practices of Meijer stores include the continuous addition of green products sold in stores, construction of LEED-certified stores and a plastic bag recycling program.
Meijer operates stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
